    Shear Striaght

What’s Jack up to? He’s rocking out to Guitar Hero down in the basement as I’m typing this right now. Seems there’s no escaping it this summer since the DS in on some Guitar Hero quest. Sigh. Jack would like to go to sleep now and so would I.

On Shear Genus they have 1 hour to style the hair of women, some of whom have not cut it since maybe birth. And they are not allowed to cut any of it. Crazy. When judge Campbell used the word bridal on Charlie I thought he’d throw up in his mouth. Then he told Nicole she had six minutes and left could she take her style in another direction. As if?

Matthew was the winner of the challenge and he dedicated the win to his wife who he evidently styles hair with side by side. Everyone wanted to toast him, well suck up to him but Matt wanted none of it and had to be coaxed into the suckery.

Then for the elimination challenge it was red carpet hair and the stylists picked dresses before picking clients. Matthew took the opportunity to go on and on about how much he loves his wife again. We get it. You’re a male hair dresser, but you’re not gay. No need no say it again, Matthew. We’re not demanding video proof. It’s not that deep. If you say it a few more times I really won’t believe you.

Matthew got to pick the order of who would choose their dresses and Nicole and Glenn were picked last. We see you didn’t suck up properly the night before
Matthew mentions his wife again and now I’m getting skeptical. And he just called Charlie a b$tch which makes me even more skeptical. I must read David Dust’s take on this.

Daniel seems to have had too much coffee because he is way pumped up and nervous and making Rene nervous too. Eek.
The models have to walk out of a limo and down a red carpet in the daylight. Very unforgiving.

Glenn, Charlie and Gail are the top 3. The winner was…Charlie! What tha-! Again?

The bottoms are Nicole, Matthew and Paulo. The loser is…Matthew. His final words? Something about how much he loves his wife and can’t want to get home to shag, maybe? Blah, blah, blah. Now I’m really not believing his story and I can’t stop laughing. I’d better watch out for that bolt of lightning that’s sure to strike me any moment. Poor on the DL Matt. Buh-Bye.

    Best,
    Kwana

    P.S.

The DS must have been reading my blog (see below) I’m deep into Highlander Bride at last night’s baseball game and what do I hear as he’s about to go up to bat in his Peter Brady hi-low voice but, “Mom, mom are you paying attention?” Sigh.
Oh boy was I in trouble. But he had a great game. 3 base hits and they won I think 12 to 4 or something like that. It’s me ya know. I could be wrong about the score, but they did win.

    Shearly Perfect

What’s Jack up to? A person would never know that Jack went to obedience training with the way he tries to attack all delivery men and workers that come to my house. I do apologize to the electricians that came by and got scared out of their wits by my Yorkie yesterday. I swear he’s all bark. Well mostly.

First off I just want to say: I WANT COFFEE!!!!!! WITH MILK AND SUGAR!!!! A big ol super iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts would be nice and heavenly. Freakin herbal tea ain’t cuttin’ it. Can you tell I’m getting cranky in the cleanse? And in further proof the DH only occasionally scans my blog, and only half listens to me, he came home with an ice coffee for me from Starbucks last night. What a sweet DH enabling he is. Crack would have been easier to resist. But resist I did. UGH!!! Lord help me! Ok rant over. See me in 10 minutes for my next rant.

Yay for Sheer Genius! It’s still so much fun.
The shortcut challenge was taking clients hair from long to short and Daniel as the winner last week picked first and the order. Then before time ran out Jaclyn said scissors down and the guest judge, the witch Tabitha from last season arrived full of vim and venom. Screech!
I loved all the back talk on the walk through with Tabitha. My what a talkative crew this is! The Shortcut winner was Charlie but I thought it should have been Nicole the runner up.

The elimination Challenge causes squeals of delight. It’s the Real Housewives of Orange County! Daniel turns out to be a total groupie and a bit nuts, dressing to watch Lauri’s wedding on TV. I love that amount of crazy.

The housewives are lots of fun to watch especially Vicki who seems thrilled to be back in the spotlight again. Whoo Hoo!

Kim Vo coined the phrase Blonderexic last night if I heard correctly while crunching on my sugar free energy bite. Perfect. As if he’s one to talk.

The Winner of the challenge was Charlie! It was his night.
The loser this week is…Parker. But not before Daniel has a little melt down and Charlie is a witchy. Ouch!

    The more things change…

What’s Jack up to? He’s just back to being Jack. I guess you can’t take the suburbs out of the dog huh?

I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of the July issue of Italian Vogue. It’s sure to be a collectors issue. Featuring all Black models photographed by Steven Meisel in an attempt to speak to the racial prejudice that has so long been prevalent in the fashion industry. The New York Times wrote about it here. Being a Black girl that got her first subscription to Vogue at age twelve the article said nothing that I didn’t already know and feel about the Black Out in the fashion industry.

I have to say. I applaud Italian Vogue for doing this but am so sad that it had to be done and am really sad that it was not done my own own American Vogue. Yeah they were nice enough to do a little piece on the subject in the July issue and feature a couple of “new” ethnic faces for that piece but that was it. Not another brown skinned girl in the editorial section. And did we need another star on the cover? Nicole Kidman, as fine as actress as she is, did not need that cover. Let’s give fashion back to the fasionistas.

It almost makes me long for the days of the Fashion Cafe. At least then we had some distinct faces in fashion.

That said beauty is beauty and it comes in all shapes sizes and colors and it’s time for the world, especially the fashion world to get on board with that before it starts to hit then where they live. In their wallets.

photos thanks to Italian Vogue and NYT

I don’t want my daughter growing up like I did, constantly searching for a face that looks like hers and then being pleasantly surprised when she gets a little glimpse. That’s just not right. Not in today’s world. Fashion has to get with it and soon.

To love a Cougar or not? It’s a jungle out there

What’s Jack up to? He’s stealing socks today and hiding in the closet. Ugh. It’s toddler time all over again.

What’s with the cougar in my blog title. Well, I was watching American Idol which I really haven’t followed this season, but it was on while I was scurrying back and forth with dinner so I got into it. While it was on I saw a sign flash that said “Cougars 4 Cook” and I was like, Eww! Now the whole Cougar thing never really crossed my mind before and it’s been out so long that it’s kind of over I think, but in the context of ultra pure American Idol it just seemed wrong and, well, Eww, to me.

Now most us are women of a certain age here. Chime in and tell me what do you all think of the term Cougar?

While I’m at it what do you think of The AI final 3? I like Syesha and think she should win. David A. is too sweet, besides his Dad is already banned and David C. will be just fine no matter if he wins or not, but the judges clearly don’t like Syesha. I don’t get it.

Now sort of still on the “cougar” topic lets talk the Sex and the City premiere and the fashions! Specifically, Sara Jessica Parker’s dress and hat. It’s all the talk with the New York papers. I have to say, I’m not a fan. I feel that she was trying too hard with this one and the color was not for her. Does anyone else remember the episode with Burger and the cooky hat where he made fun of her? This was the same thing! Say it ain’t so, Carrie. Big sigh. I do like Kim Cattrall’s look though.

And, we won’t even talk about the decision of having the premier in London over New York when New York was the 5th star of the show. Whatever. I’ll still be buying my ticket.

So it was goodbye to my spunky little Marissa on Dancing with the Stars. I know she annoyed quite a few this season with all that darn exuberance, but she always made me smile. Buh-Bye Marissa! Good luck with the baby!

Update:I just found out on GMA that her dance partner, Tony and his wife are expecting boy/girl twins (like me!) so good luck to him too!

    Mish-Mosh Wednesday

What’s Jack up to? He’s jumping around going wild since all the ladies are coming over at our place for knitting today. Jack please don’t be too nutty. Folks won’t want to come back.
    It’s kind of a mish-mosh Wednesday today.
First up Fashion. Specifically Wide Leg Jeans. They are all over the mags again and I actually got a pair (total impulse buy) that I haven’t worn yet. I feel like they can go either way. With the wrong top or shoes it could easily be shlump city. To me it’s all about the tiny top and the heel with these pants and honestly I can’t walk in heels. Eek. Who know when I’ll wear them. What do you all think?

In Top Model News. Season 3 runner up Yaya Dacosta is now on ABC’s daytime soap All My Children playing the daughter of newly back Angie Hubbard. Yes, I’ve been known to watch AMC. Actually I grew up on on it at Nana’s knee. Seems it’s old home week on AMC Angie and Jessie are back together and now they are being Dixie back from the dead as a ghost. Wonder if Yaya will help sell some Charmed books and perfume. Ugh.

Tune in tomorrow for a great interview to celebrate the launch day for my bud Marley Gibson and her Sorority 101 series!

    Top of the Mornin’

What’s Jack up to? Chilling on a Monday. I think he’s as happy as I am to have the house free of teens for a few hours. I know right, Jack? Then tension goes down, like 10 notches. Whew.

Happy St. Patrick’s day to you all. I hope you have a fun day and let’s give a birthday shout out to the lovely Patricia of pve design . She’s my very own bannner designer that I interviewed here.
I hope you have a wonderful year Patricia and all your dreams come true.

This was a pretty busy weekend in Kwana land and unfortunately the migraines were kicking my butt-hard. I’m still following doctors orders and not taking any pain meds. Ugh. Giving birth to the twins was easier and I went into labor with them not once, not twice, but three times! TMI? Sorry. Moving on…
The twins had a big extra credit assignment where they had to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to do a Global History assignment. What good teachers they have. So the DH, DD, DS and I got to take a short ride to the city to check out The MET. I’m Tim Gunn in this photo.

The Parking Gods were smiling upon us and a spot magically opened up on 87th and 5th. OMG! That like NEVER happens.
The museum was pretty crowded and unfortunately the projects weren’t in my favorite wings, but I did get to spend a little time pretending I was on Project Runway by checking out the Temple of Dendur and even standing in front of Christian’s inspiration picture: Portrait of Andres de Andrade-i-la Col. by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Yeah. He rocked it.

So tonight I’ll be watching Dancing with the –Stars? I have to say Stars? Because come on, are you kidding me here? But I’ll still watch and find some E list celeb to get behind.

After that The Bachelor is back and this time he bla- no, he’s British! Just as good! This is the show I hate to watch, but always do. I have to support my dear Nana who at the end of every season curses out the Bachelor calling him all sort sorts terrible names because he didn’t pick the “amazing” girl that she thought he should. Yeah she vows never to watch either, but gets suckered in too. After the, ‘where are they now?’ show last week. We both decided to give the hot Brit a go, but thought the girls seemed very “Rock of Love”. Scary.

    How was your weekend?

    VB Rides Again!

    Blogging Project Runway- the finale!

What’s Jack up to? He’s on time-out this morning for climbing on the kitchen table and eating the DD’s strawberry oatmeal. Jack stay off the table. Yech!

So here it is. The end and I already feel a sense of loss. Wednesdays won’t be the same for me.
Okay the shows starting. Eeee… Here are just my random thoughts as the show goes on.
Jillian will you listen to Tim and get rid of that wacky sleeved sweater? No? sigh, ok.
Christian is so nervous. It’s sweet. He actually has nice things to say about his competitors. At least for now. How much do I love that he said he walked around in the shoes for a week so thinks the models should be able to do it too. Oh, Christian!
I love watching the designers come up with the total look. Hair, makeup and all. Not to into the strange braids though.
Tim’s last ‘gather ’round’ makes me want to cry. Tim can you be my life coach?
Ok here it is the final show. Down to business.
And the surprise guest judge is… wait for it… Victoria ‘Posh’ Beckham. Love her!!! Major!

Oh, Christian saying everyone looks fierce? Was that for me? Ahh Mango! I’ll miss you so. (shout out to David Dust)

Well, I am a total Bravo nerd (could you tell) so at the last minute I pulled out my note pad and decided to score each outfit with this scale: L=love, H=hate and OK=it’s ok

    Here is my scoring:
    Jillian:
    L: III
    H:III
    OK:IIIIII
Good for her with the knits, but not cohesive. and some of the proportions were off to me.

    Rami:
    L:IIII
    H:III
    OK:IIIII
Some real beauties. The weaving was amazing! But his quirky color sense was not good.

    Christian:
    L:IIIIII
    H:II
    OK:IIII
Love the black, love the hats, love the total look of the collection.

By that calculation and 25% for total cohesive look. Christian should win for me, with Rami second and Jillian 3rd. But all did a great job. What a night! What a fashion nerd I am!
Uh-oh now the deliberation. Stomach knot. Tension, tension.
    Commercial. Ugh.
We’re back! It’s so hard. No tears, you’ll make me cry.
Aww, Jillian Bye bye. Mar are you ok?

Oh, it’s down to Rami and Cristian where I knew it would be. Nail bite alert!

Christian is it. What!!! Mango did it and at 21! I’m happy with this outcome.

Things I’ll miss after today: Christian model walking, hearing “fierce”, Chris’ laugh, Tim Gunn.
Thanks Project Runway. Bring on Top Chef!
    best,

    A New Earth, really?

What’s Jack up to? Well he still needs a haircut but he’s no longer a stinky dog. Thank goodness. Check out the video at the end to see how nutty Jack is when wet. He just hates it, but does he have to dry off on my couch?

Thanks to all of you who visited yesterday!
The whole Love and Consequences memoir hoax discussion was really great and very important. Feel free to continue to share you thoughts.

The more I thought about the whole subject, the angrier I got. And what really got to me was the underlying exploitism of the races that I saw there. The fact that Jones thought somehow that her lie was justified because she was giving a voice to people who didn’t have one. Ugh. Talk about a big ego. As if she was somehow more qualified to write the story than say a real girl who grew up in that time and that environment. Pluh-ease.

Speaking of ego. I watched the Oprah webcast of A New Earth and about five minutes into it I was pleasantly surprised at how many points spoke to me.

They talked about ideas like getting out of your head and stillness and stopping the mental noise which is something that I’ve been striving for especially with the stress in my life and my migraines. They also addressed those who were struggling with the tough 1st chapter of the book. See we are not alone! It does get easier. Another thing addressed was all the questions people had about dealing with this book along with their religion which was a real issue for me as a Christan. More to come.
I won’t recommend this as something you must read or listen to and follow because that’s not for me to do and I’m still working on myself and how to incorporate these thoughts into my life and my beliefs, but I would recommend going to Oprah’s site and watching some of the webcast. It’s up there now for anyone to watch. That way you can judge for yourself. If you’re reading the book it made it a lot easier to understand. I was so not feeling on the same planet as Tolle when I was just reading. Now I think I may be. I do like they he said he didn’t want to be any ones Guru. I always question those that want to lead and have power. go judge for yourself and feel free to come back here and chat.

Oh, Did any one see Paris Hilton hanging out with a shaman and giving away diamond necklaces? What up with dat? Discuss amongst yourselves. I just can’t…

    Seeing Red

What’s Jack up to? Today he’s looking forward to a quiet Monday after the vacation week. It is going to be quiet right, Jack?
So last night was Oscar night. Thanks to the writer’s strike being over it all went without a hitch. OK, well there were a few hitches on the red carpet but for the most part everyone did well.
Our favorite judge Heidi was definitely not out with her gorgeous red number which will be auctioned off for charity. We love her for that.

Red was the color of the night and worn well by many. Here are Katherine Heigl, Miley Cyrus and Anne Hathaway.

But for me, black is always the way to go. Jennifer Garner did it well here.

The biggest surprise for me was the amazing Ruby Dee not winning best supporting actress. To me she should have won it years ago and her performance in American Gangster was just wonderful. Can you belive she is 83 years old? Just beautiful.

The supporting actress winner, Tilda Swinton I’m sure did a wonderful job, but can we talk about this look? I’m all for individuality here, but, huh?

Now lets talk about everyone’s favorite stripper with a heart of gold, Diablo Cody. How much we I love her snarky quick wit so evident in Juno that you need to watch it twice to get in all the jokes? And how much do we love the fact that she is and ex stripper who is now an Oscar winner? Wow. I also really liked the fact that Miss Diablo, who even got cheeky with Oprah, was at a loss for words and had to run off the Kodak stage because she was overrun with emotions. Aww.

Now the dress… I have no clue why she chose this. Maybe she wants to show she’s not a conformist and will not be tamed, hence the animal print, but come on. With that gorgeous skin and hair, her body was begging to be sheathed in a simple black column with a small train. Oh well maybe next year.

As for the big Best Actor winner Daniel Day Lewis and his wife. I will not comment, but just say congratulations on a well deserved win.

    Best, Kwana
