A Date With Your Family
What’s Jack up to? Well the Dear Twins are back in school so Jack’s roaming around wondering where everyone got off to. Enjoy the quiet Jack. I will.
I’m feeling quite uninspired by pop culture lately so I’m going back in time a bit to and old lurve, Mystery Science Theater. Funny, silly, very inspiring. Why? I don’t know. But it is.
That said, I thought I’d invite you all to dinner at at my house. Yeah, it’s just like this. Really, it is. The Dear Twins are so helpful. Riiiiight. Just replace the smallest boy with Jack. Use your imagination. Have fun! Oh and pretend these are Black people. Enjoy. Peace Out!

What’s Jack up to? Right now Jack’s chilin. I think he’s dog tired. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Blame it on Pelosi everybody else is.
Really, I’m the one whose dog tired. It’s what happens during a one sock moment (scroll down) also this middle of the week holiday has thrown me off. One day of school and two days off has me thrown. It’s day two of the kids at home. I don’t know why at 14 they think of me as, Julie their cruise director. I somehow messed up there.
That said, I can’t think of much interesting to say today (not that I’m interesting on other days) so I’ll leave you with this video since Bridget Jones always makes me smile (Colin too).
Oh, and wouldn’t it be lovey for Helen Fielding to come out with something new. A new Bridget! Anybody hearing anything. I’m not ashamed to admit Bridget change my life.

What Jack up to? He’s chilling this morning after a busy weekend filled with tons of exercise. For some reason he felt the need to walk me more than me walk him. It was all good though. I can sure use the exercise. Thanks Jack.
After the stressful week last week I felt the need for a little mom therapy so I took Saturday afternoon off for a little me time.
I had the pleasure of heading to the Rye library for a reading and book signing with Melissa Walker author of the teen Violet On The Runway series and my blog friend. She was speaking with spokesmodel Selena Breed about writing, modeling and the fashion industry.
It was such a great talk and the girls were on the edge of their seats listening to every word as Melissa read from her book. I was thrilled to finally meet Melissa in person. Holla Melissa!
Then to continue the mom-therapy I went to the nearest multiplex to see what was playing and lucked out with Tyler Perry’s latest The Family The Preys just starting. With it being the opening weekend the movie was packed so me and my overpriced box of Goobers had to sit in the second row but it was so worth it. In my opinion this is Tyler Perry’s best movie yet.
Starring Alfre Woodard and Kathy Bates I was blown away by this movie. There is no Medea, no slapstick, none of the usual lines that you can just plug in and anticipate coming up even before the actors deliver them. Tyler steps out and gets serious. Plus you ca
n’t go wrong with Sanaa Lathan and Robin Givens sparing.
I tell you that Tyler really knows how to make me feel like a writer slug. He’s written and produced I don’t know how many plays and movies, is a millionaire I don’t know how many times over and guess what he just turned the ripe old age of 39 this weekend. Happy Birthday Tyler! Get to work, Kwana. You’ve got some catching up to do.
What’s on tap for your week? Me, I plan on making it a better week than the last one.

What’s Jack up to? Jack busy being my live vacuum cleaner. Going around nibbling and licking things up off the floor. A sign of my poor housekeeping I’m sure. Thanks for the not so subtle hint, Jack.
Life is starting to feel terribly disordered. The bloom is off the rose of school already and the fangs are coming out on one of the dear teens. I tell ya, I’d love to always be one of those pretty young blogs, all sweet and pastel that talk about the bliss of domestic life and motherhood, but there are days when I just can’t. I’ve got teens. Young teens. A boy and and girl and that means stress. So there.
I was doing some mommy blog hopping and honestly from what I can see from most of these pretty young blogs the moms have pretty young children so they are not living my life. This blog might be a lot prettier and a lot less driven toward my escape to non-reality tv if I my kids were 4 and not 14.
That said I’m feeling the need for some sort of order and control so I’m picking up another WIP for a few moments to soothe my mind and make me smile. Knitting anyone? I should at least be able to get these stitches in line if I can’t my kids. At least this sock will be done.
What are some of your ways to de-stress?
Best,
Kwana
Project Glamor Girl
What’s Jack up to? Jack is trying hard to get into the back to school swing. Just when he got used to the nuttiness of summer, poof, everyone was gone. I’ll try and rouse him a bit today. The poor thing spent all day on the couch yesterday just waiting for the Dear Twins to come home.
Man, was my house wild last night. In the early evening I had the pleasure of visiting with my dear buddy PVE. Shout out to JJ who is looking mighty fine! I got to finally meet her lovely and talented sister Liz. If she lived in NY I’d enjoy talking her ears off just like I do Patricia’s. Then it was back home for taco night to celebrate the first day for school and hear all the back to school drama. Fun.Then it was school supply mania as the twins worked on getting their many binders organized. Why is it that now every teacher wants their own notebook. What’s up with that? Remember back in the day when you were fine with one notebook and if you were really lucky or “rich” you had a Trapper Keeper? Those twins needed 5 binders each. That’s a bit much I think. What about the families with 3, 4 or dare I say 5 kids? I think you know who I’m talking about. It’s expensive and a back breaker. While all this is going on I come to find out it’s the season premiere of America’s Next Top Model. What?! Quick get me to the DVR! We’ll have to deal with that later. I’m trying to get ready for Project Runway and the fact that I’ve got to watch the RNC and The Sara Palin speech. Then I find out the the new Top Design Show is Premiering. It’s overload. Yikes! I’ll handle what I can. It was Project Runway while blogging notes then the DH and I watched the convention while multi-tasking kids, lunch, school and yelling “what tha blank did she just say!” through the house. Now for the fun of Project Runway.Project Runway is on with no Shaggy Keith, but some tired designers. Tim comes to the designers on the Runway with Heidi and tells them they are designing for a fashion legend. He takes them immediately to meet the legend. They are walking and walking. For some reason Blayne wants it to be Mary Kate Olson. Why? He is a strange bird. They arrive at Diane von Furstenberg’s showroom and Kenley in ready to burst into tears. Sweet. Someone tase her. They have to design an outfit inspired by the 1948 movie A Foreign Affair with Marlene Dietrich. This sounds like a really fun challenge. And the winning look will be sold to American Express card members and some proceeds going to the CFDA Fund. The designers even get to rummage in Diane’s fabric closet. Yummy!Back in the work room and Suede launches into 3rd person. He’s back to normal which is so not.
Blayne is doing Flashdance in his own look with this crazy headband but I’m taken by his sketching ability. Fierce.
Joe is ragging on Terri. Why? Kenley is doing a dress and very worried about it. Stella is taking the spy theme quite far and being a secretive. Cool. Plus she pulled out this low brimmed hat to design in so no one can see her eyes. I’m suspicious.
Grim Tim comes in for this walk though.
Suede. Tim doesn’t get it.
Leanne-Jacket needs work. Think about it.
Joe- Shanghai ambitious.
Korto-design is growing on Tim
Stella-Doesn’t know where the inspiration woman is from. I see a problem here.
Kenley- Tim sees Shanghai. He likes it.Runway day, Hooray! But I’m afraid lots of the designs still look a hot mess. Joe? Stella? But let’s get to the Runway. Here we go…Joe- No. No. No.
Leanne –Yes! Lovely dress. Love the back.Terri-YesJerell-Yes, but lose the hats already.Korto-yes. Pretty yellow.Blayne-yes jacket- no to the pantlets.Stella-No. What’s with the cape.Kenley-yes. Lovely dress. Perfect fit.The winner is Leanne. It’s her second. Win is a row. Wow. Leanne goes from under the radar to a formidable competitor. Nice. And out this week is Stella. I’m shocked. I would have sworn it would be have been Joe with that wackiness he did this week. But Stella seemes like shes ready to go. The woman is taking her pleather cape, black eyeliner and she is out. Tim is like Buh-bye! Strange night.
We’ll talk more reality once I catch up. Later!Best,KwanaBack to School!
What’s Jack up to? Jack is confused today. It’s the first day of school and he’s wondering where the heck everyone went off to?
Today is the first day of school. I can’t believe it. I’ve actually got sophomores in high school. I’m way too young for that. Aren’t I? Come on please agree with me. As with every other first day of school. I got all choked up. I can’t help it. I always cry when my babies go off to school. As much as they make me crazy it always tears me up to let them go. My wish for them is a successful and happy year with low drama and lots of laughs. Fingers crossed. Check them out from a great day in Central Park so many years ago. Oh my Dear Twins go forth and do well!
Switching Gears…
I know my little writing blog has been extremely political as of late and I do apologize if I’m boring or offending anyone, but this is just what’s on my mind right now and hey, it’s my blog. I will get happy soon. Hey, Project Runway comes on tonight! Meanwhile…I may get in a little trouble here, but I’m writing anyway.
Today I can’t help but talk more about VP pick Palin and what’s going on in her family and the whole spin that’s being put on it. I’m not coming down on the daughter here. I’m with Barack on that. I’m coming down on the party and the wacky spin that’s being put on it. Why do I feel like it’s being used as a stepping stone on the way to the White House? Something doesn’t sit right with me on that.
Talk about hypocrisy. Suddenly teenage out of wedlock pregnancy is not a big deal when it’s someone on the right side of the American flag. I can’t help but wonder if it would be a completely different story if it had happened to a girl from the left side of the tracks. It amazes me that they can put smiles on their faces and say it’s ok that this young girl is having a baby at such an early age. How many times have I seen a Stepford smile over they past few days and someone saying that this is an everyday occurrence and not a big deal. Who is supposed to be drinking this Kool Aid? Why is nothing is being said about how her life will change and how many opportunities she may miss? What are we supposed to tell our daughters when they say, “see what’s the big deal? The Vice President’s daughter did it?”
I wonder if Gov. Palin, if she’s elected, will set up adequate funding for all the young unwed mothers in the inner city who do not have strong families behind them with moose hunting mamas and papas that can’t arrange shotgun weddings, but instead find themselves pregnant and without the father in sight, but only Maury Povich and a sorry paternity test?
Will she fund programs that provide health care for the mothers and the babies or help those mothers get back on track with their lives once the babies are born? I wonder. The whole thing boggles my mind and weighs heavy on my heart. What say you people? Give it to me.Best,

What’s Jack up to? Oh, that Jack was really naughty yesterday. Just when I said he was being nice too. The DD let him off his leash for a second to switch leashes to take him for a walk and he took off running up the block after two much larger dogs that went by a few minutes before. Darn Jack. They could have taken his head off. I told you he had a Napoleon complex. Luckily, they just laughed at the little dog running up to them talking trash. Whew!
So, did you watch? I sure did!Last night I watched Barack Obama accept the nomination for President of The United States along with Nana and my fourteen year old African-American DD (dear daughter) and DS (dear son). I could not lose my smile. What a proud night! Sadly, the DH was still away on business, but called us to show his spirit.
It was so wonderful watching it with my grandmother who admitted that she never thought she would get to see Black man come this close to the presidency in her lifetime. She cried with happiness at being able to see it with her great-grandchildren. I hope that they realize just how remarkable and significant it is. They are now living in a new age. My two babies who share a birthday with Doctor Martin Luther King are a big step closer to his Dream. Our Dream.photos from cnn, msnbc and yahoo
The speech was amazing. I heard it called by some hard nosed commentators a symphony. I’ll agree. One of my favorite lines of the night was when Barack said, “change doesn’t come from Washington, it comes to Washington.” I hear that. My bag is packed. Let’s go!
I don’t know how the other party will respond next week. But Barack has laid it all out tonight.

What’s Jack up to? I’m afraid I’ll not have Jack calmed down until the Dear Twins are back in school. Jack is having a fine time chasing the DD around the house and snapping at her toes today. When he’s not doing that he’s roughhousing with the DS. No sweet little lap dog is he.
The DNC has begun and as I thought I’d be, I was riveted. The first night did not disappoint with Michelle Obama giving the keynote speech. I don’t think a potential first lady has given a keynote speech at a national convention so that in itself is historic, but besides that the fact that it was a Black woman giving the speech made it that much more so.
I didn’t expect to be as emotionally moved as I was, but there you have it. I could not take the smile from my face or account for the great sense of pride that I felt for women, African-Americans, my children and even my country. Count me as one of those teary eyed Black women at the end of the speech. Could we actually be here in 2008? Finally. It was a wonderful heartfelt speech that showed her heart and her fabulous mind. That Barack is a lucky man. Must be some good judgement there to choose Michelle. I say the more women in politics the better!
Best,Kwana
Take me out to the ball game
What’s Jack up to? Well Jack’s been in a bit of trouble. He’s feeling a little snappy and snapping at all of us around here. We’ve got to put a stop to that. I don’t know what’s gotten into Jack this past weekend.
The baseball weekend is over and I think possibly the season. But who knows? It didn’t end on a high, but at least the DS got the RBI (notice how I throw the lingo around?) that brought in the one run that the team did get on Sunday. Go DS! Poor DD had to suffer through two days of baseball, but hey she did get fries and some fine outlet shopping out of the deal. The summer is slowly winding down…
On another note, while to listing to hot mess Amy Winehouse for the hundredth time this year I was struck by this song; HE CAN ONLY HOLD HER and how much it seems like just about every other hunting romance that I love or maybe I’m just over emotional right now either way I’m just crazy for this song. Sorry the video cuts it off. Have a great day!
Best,
Kwana
Night Games
What’s Jack up to? Jack is taking it slow this morning. I guess he’s picking up on my tired vibe. Thanks so much Jack. I really appreciate it.
Well, the boys played on and on last night. Not really. It just felt like it. Very Looooog innings. The sun went down and the temperature dropped and the DS’s baseball game lasted until 11:30. We got home about 12:30. Sleep came upon me at about 2AM. Poor DH taking the 7:38 train in to work this morning. UGH!
It was thrilling for the boys to play under the lights and have their names announced over the PA system. The game really started to heat up in the 6th inning. But in the end our team won 11 to 7 bringing in some safety runs in the final inning.
Does this mean they are the champions? No. It means they live to fight another night. And I get to drive another night. Oh and cheer another night. So that will be fun.
And guess what, they just added another tournament for the weekend. Hooray? I’m going to so get a smackdown by the mama police I just know it.
Best,
Kwana
