    Rainy Days and …

What’s Jack up to? The nutty dog is going stir crazy from all the rain. He wants to run free and he’s taking it out on me. No, Jack I don’t want to play fetch again. We’ll go out.

Yesterday was a soaker in NYC with the rain sometimes coming down sideways. You’d think this would be a real downer, but not really. It was an inconvenience, but I wasn’t down about it because I got to go into the city (I aways feel like such a transplant nerd when I say that) and meet with my critique partners, JS, JM and M which is always such a treat.
We met for lunch at our favorite diner on Broadway. WW core aside, I ordered my usual diner grilled cheese with bacon and it was de-lish. The perfect amount of crisp on the outside. All I go to a diner for.
Sidebar treat: I got a primo spot right on Broadway after only fifteen minutes of circling around and praying to the parking Gods. See I have been a good girl, Santa. LOL!
We drank plenty of cups of coffee and toasted M’s landing an agent. Yay, M!!!! And JM selling another short story!!! She is totally rocking. The woman is teaching us all a thing or two about what it means to ‘Just Do It!’ no matter what. She’s a super busy mom who somehow steals the time to get her writing done. My hero.
I’m always so inspired when I meet with my girls. We talk books, and tv and being inspired and what to do when nothing inspires you. It’s just great. Thanks ladies. You always make want to be so much better. It was a perfect rainy day.

New Author Interview- Leanna Renee Heiber! Dark Nest

What’s Jack up to? Well, I’m watching him closely today after he’s gone and gotten into the DD’s pockets yesterday and into a pack of gum. Oh, Jack.

Today I’m please to be interviewing a friend and fellow RWA/NYC Chapter member, Leanna Renee Heiber on the release of her futuristic/psychic/fantasy book: DARK NEST!

Hi, Leanna, Major Congrats on the release of DARK NEST. Thanks so much for doing this interview. I’m so happy to have you here at my little blog.

Leanna: Thank you so much. I’m thrilled to be here, Kwana, major thanks for letting me chat with you!

    1. Let’s start with my traditional question. Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?

Leanna: I was writing as an outlet before I was doing anything else, so it was something I just did out of obsessive love, not something I thought to make a career of. I was scared I’d stop loving writing if I focused on it as a career. Pursuing it professionally didn’t occur to me until after college when I started realizing that, all my other artistic pursuits such as theatre aside, writing was what I cared most about and I had to take it more seriously.

    2. Tell us the story of your “overnight” success. This is my favorite question.

Leanna: *chuckle* Well, nothing feels overnight (it took me almost four years just to get an agent) and just the fact that I haven’t walked away from this often brutally painful business would be my only claim to being a “success”. That goes for any of us that can face the notepad or computer and keep writing week in and week out.
    — Sidebar to this question: did your agent sell this book for you?
Leanna: No, this is a novella and he only represents my traditional book length work.

    3. How do you feel about being an eBook author? Where do you see the future of eBooks going and your future in it?

Leanna: I believe it’s a great opportunity. I’m still learning a lot about the marketing aspects of being a writer. But I do know that the eBook industry is invaluable in taking temperatures. EBooks can respond to what the public is reading and can attend to trends and tastes almost immediately. The advantage of the electronic market is the turnaround time. I had my book accepted, contracted, cover art created, copy and line edited and released within 4 months. Due to the nature of New York houses, that sort of turnaround time just isn’t possible. So while my agent is trying to swing the bigger stuff in NY, I can get my feet wet and hit the ground running with a short work that will hopefully start building me an audience. The future of eBooks will only get bigger. All major houses are now offering downloads and with the electronic readers on the market, I know they’re here to stay. However, if I have a choice, I confess that I like tactile books best. And many publishers, big and small, will do both eBook and print runs. (In fact, I just found out that my book will be going into a print run as well!) I will say it’s true that with smaller, new or electronic companies you accept some risks. Crescent Moon Press is very new and doesn’t have the benefit of being a familiar, ‘tried and true’ company yet. But sometimes you make choices because of the type of work you create. I specifically accepted a contract from Crescent Moon Press because of their interest in and commitment to Cross-Genre fiction (all my work is very cross-genre, DARK NEST is a futuristic/paranormal/fantasy/romance) and I believe in their mission to produce quality fiction that lives and breathes outside of the traditional genre boxes. I can get behind that. Electronic presses like Crescent Moon, while still adhering to quality standards (my editor was exceedingly thorough with me, which I loved), can give an author a great deal of artistic freedom and that’s exhilarating.

    4. Have you always wanted to write in the Fantasy market? What draws you there? The possibilities of the imagination seem endless.

Leanna: Yes, always Fantasy. It was my second skin growing up and to me, no other genre holds such potent magic. There has to be a love story too, to keep me bound and loyal to the work. Blending large, sweeping, fantastical and supernatural realms with the lushly intimate human experience of love is my favorite combination.

    5. Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Leanna: Full-blooded pantser. People with spreadsheets scare me. I need a notebook filled with unintelligible scrawls paired with a blank computer screen and a lot of time on my hands. Eventually I come out on the other end with a book. I can’t really tell you how I get there. It’s cosmic every time.

    6. What’s next for you, Leanna?

Leanna: I recently sent off a YA proposal to my agent; a magical time-travel series set in and around Central Park . I need to work on finishing the first manuscript in the series.
Thanks again for hanging with us.
Leanna: Kwana, you’re wonderful, thank you.
Please check out Leanna at her website (http://www.leannareneehieber.com/) or at her fun blog (http://www.leannareneebooks.blogspot.com/) and don’t forget to check out DARK NEST! (www.crescentmoonpress.com/catalog)

Leanna grew up in rural Ohio and began her first novel in grade school. It was many years later that she thought about doing something with one of her books. Choosing to pursue BFA degree in theatre performance, Leanna continued writing in the midst of arduous rehearsal and performance schedules. Hopping around the country performing in the theatre circuit, her first publications came in the form of short plays and essays for Dramatics Magazine. Her short plays won awards and garnered productions. This gave her the confidence to begin publishing longer works of fiction. Leanna is a proud member of the actors’ union Actors Equity and a certified Actor-Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors. She is represented by New York literary agent Nicholas Roman Lewis
A selection of her favourite things include: stained glass windows, social justice, Central Park, the Muppets, vegetarian restaurants, ghost stories, classy sword-fights, a finely tailored corset and ridiculously cute furry animals. Leanna lives in New York City with a wonderful gentleman and a fuzzy white bunny.

PS- Scroll down to yesterday’s post if you’re a fan of Survivor!

  • Leif Garrett,  Reality tv,  survivor

He’s not a Survivor- Not by a long shot.

Did you watch Erik go down in a flame of no glory? Poor thing. He’ll probably be taking James’ place as officially the dumbest survivor in history? Who is he you ask? Why it’s Erik. The pseudo Leif Garrett of Survivor.

The sweetheart had such blinding stars in his eyes that he willfully believed a couple of women that hated him when they batted their lashes and said they promised they wouldn’t vote for him if he gave up his hard won immunity. And he did!!! Ugh!!!
I thought James would bust a gut. It was too good for words. It’s an all ladies final four and I’m loving it!

    Reality Round Up- Wedding Woes

So it’s Wednesday night and America’s Next Top Model time.

The girls are hatin’ on Dominique and Dominique is being delusional calling herself the Seleisha of this competition. What?! One thing’s for sure, Anya’s been rocking. And now it’s down to Anya, Dominique, Whitney and Fatima.

The first challenge has the girls photographing each other which was interesting then they got to photo graph Paulina, a judge. Better had not make her look bad! Fatima did a good job and was string. Dominique faltered and had Paulina running. Whitney was professional and in awe. Anya and all with her “vision” and tossing petals. It may work or not.

The winner was Fatima. She was thrilled to finally win a challenge. I think this was a good one for the girls. I have a feeling they are setting Fatima up to get to the finals.
Now to the photo shoot and it’s night glamour with Nigel and he’s not happy with anyone. Anya didn’t get it. Fatima was a mess. Whitney was posing and Dominique was staging. It was all a ‘hot tranny mess’.
We’ll see what happens in panel.
Anya gets a good review. Whitney gets a so-so. Too posy.
Dominique gets a real ‘hot tranny mess’ review and they tell her she looks like transvestite. Poor thing. Fatima has a sweet shot but it’s just sweet.

The girl going home this week is… Dominique. Guess what? I wrote line this even before Tyra called her name.

Next Up is Top Hot Mess! and the Wedding wars.

Top Chef starts with Spike and Andrew crying over Mark. Waaa!
Quick-fire and no special guest. Just Tom and Padma and the winner of the quick-fire no longer gets immunity. Eek. It’s a fork spoon team thing and their racing to make mayo, cleaning monkfish fish, slicing oranges and doing something I don’t understand with Artichokes.
Dale, Lisa, Nikki and Spike are one team and Richard, Andrew, Stephanie and Antonia are on the other. Dale cheers Antonia like he’s in the hood. Yelling “Strong Island” It doesn’t work. He punches the locker.
Antonia says he needs his diaper changed. Perfect.

Now for the challenge. Wedding wars. They are catering a wedding and the chefs are not happy. 125 guests each. The bride and groom run their own restaurant. Uh-oh. One team gets the bride and other gets the groom.
Groom’s team is Dale, Nikki, Spike and Lisa they get Italian and Nikki gets happy. Dale is not feeling her. Lisa is ready to fall in line with Nikki. I’m with dale. Why trust Nikki?

Bride team, Richard, Andrew, Antonia, Stephanie get. Southern and Fried comfort food. Stephanie is already giving Andrew the smack-downs.
The chefs even have to decorate and Richard admits to wearing pink shoes. Why? I don’t even wear pink shoes. That’s just wrong.
Grooms side doing a bunch of stiff but what really worries me is that Nikki is making pasta again. Uh-oh.
Bride’s side: they are also making a bunch of stuff that sounds just yummy. No time to get into it thouygh. Sorry.
I’m loving Dale tonight. He’s on his meats (shut up) and just moving. Fast and furious but it’s getting on the other chef’s nerves. They don’t like his quality.
Uh oh . It’s getting late and Richard’s getting on Andrew’s nerves.
Nikki is mulling over the pasta and checking on Dale. She better worry about that pasta.
Dale is chugging the Red Bull. Antonia had the crazy eyes.

Tom walks in looking like sunshine in the morning and the chefs look that hell. They can’t even remember what they are doing.

The wedding is on. Tom thinks the groom’s cake is fugly. It is. But tastes good. The chefs are a mess and Dale is still cooking is behind off and the other chefs are hating him for it. Nikki throws his under the bus while she’s serving the judges. I can’t stand her!
In the judging room: Brides team wins and I knew and Richard is sweet gives is win to Stephanie for her cake. Aww. She shares. Aww. Move on to the smack down!

    Now for the losers.
Spike tilts his fedora and spits fire at Dale. FIRE! Name calling and all. Nikki steps back and takes no responsibility for the all Italian menu. NONE. Hate her! Dale takes ALL responsibility.
Glad room is anything but. The Glad people do not want their products shown!

Judges deliberate and…Nikki is out!!! Yes!!

PS- Keep reading for the Arte Y Pico Awards!

  • awards,  blogs,  jack

    She really likes me!

What’s Jack up to? He’s being his old self and and getting into all sorts of devilment. Climbing on top of the dining table on the sly to see if there’s any food he can steal. Jack get you butt down!! Next he’s jumping in and out of the empty bathtub. Like I need his dirty butt in my clean tub. Jack!!
So I was so excited to find out the the fab Melissa Walker picked my blog to win the Arte Y Pico award. What? Hold the phone! Not me? Totally undeserved. Look at how pretty it is. Thanks Melissa!

    Here are the rules:
    1. Pick 5 blogs that deserve the award for creativity, design, interesting material, and also contribute to the blogging community, no matter what language.

    2. Each award has to have the name of the author and also a link to his/her blog to be visited by everyone.

    3. Each award winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that has given her/him the award itself.

    4. The Award winner and the one who has given the prize have to show the link of Arte Y Pico blog, so everyone will know the origin of this award. (Espero que hable espanol!)

    5. To show these rules.

So I guess it’s pay it forward time:

First up is pvedesign for her constant contribution to the art world. Everyday she adds something beautiful to her blog.

Next is Brown Girl Gumbo. I can’t make it without my daily dose of fashion and beauty. Brown Girl is always on the cutting edge of fashion. Check her out!

Third is Megan Frampton. My girl Megan is a writer, blogger and mother who always has something smart to say. And a good dose of male eye candy never hurt anyone. Clive Owen anyone?

Fourth I’m going international with Aurea. Mary-Laure lives in Paris and travels all over Europe snapping gorgeous pics, and lucky us, sharing it with the world. And her dog Benjy is too cute.

Lastly, I’m going to a design and decor blog that I love: My Notting Hill. Notting Hill always posts lovely and inspirational pictures that make me want to better my home or at least sweep the dang porch and buy myself some flowers.

These are the blogs that inspire me to try to do a little better. Thanks Bloggers! Now pass it on…

    Knit Wednesday

What’s Jack up to? He’s chilling and happy. Feeling springy and getting into all sorts of mess. Why does he do this right after he gets a bath though? Ugh!

I decided to do a knit Wednesday today and making it wordless for 5minutes for mom since unless I’m with my knitting group I’m not talking much while knitting. Remember the lovely little scarf I started a while back….

Well, I finished it and gave it to Ms. Marley as a present for her Sorority 101 book launch. Here it is along with my strange toes. LOL. I like how it came out. Plus I gave it to her just in time for 70 degree weather. Perfect!

Now it’s time for me to start a new project. I’m going to go for something ambitious that will take me into fall. More to come later.

Besides knitting yarn I’m busy knitting up the plot of my newest book. What are you knitting up this Wednesday?

    Tackle It Tuesday

I’ve been dying to post this photo and link it do 5minutes for mom for their Tackle it Tuesday projects and now Tuesday comes and I almost forget it. Bleh.
It’s my linen/toiletry closet that should have been declared a disaster area about 9 months ago. It finally got to be too much when every time I opened it a tube of something would fallout and clonk me in the head.

So I put on my big girl panties and cleared everything out of the closet. Here it is at stage 2.

Then onto stage 3 after throwing out a huge trash bag of junk that was expired and perhaps deadly. Yay me! Project Tackled! Ah the simple joys of life…

    The Party Rolls On…I wish

What’s Jack up to? He’s a happy dog today. Extra fun walks yesterday from the DD and the DH because of the nice weather and slightly longer days. Pulse more barking fun due to more folks walking down the street also due to the nice weather and slightly longer days. It’s a shame how he terrorizes the good people of the neighborhood. I can feel the disdain coming through the walls as they walk by. Sorry, we really are nice people. I swear.

So the party still rolls on, well, at least in my mind.
I’m not enjoying this back to reality stuff. I’m missing the lovely Lenox Hotel with their turn down service and Aveda soaps. Sigh.
Here’s a little slide show from Marley’s super Sorority 101 book launch. A fun time was had by all. Women on the loose!

For the less tame version. Check out Ms. Mel’s Mel-O-Drama blog. See, I’m fine directing you there because I’m clearly not implicated in any of those photos! LOL.

    That’s Your Baby?

What’s Jack up to? He’s so happy that it’s looking like spring again or maybe that’s me after it being a bit cold and rainy in Boston this weekend. Sunshine and 70 today in NY. Yay, Jack! But don’t get too happy the walk will be short. It’s all about the writing from now on, baby.

So, Marley’s book party could not have been anymore spectacular. What a time we had. I got to meet and visit with so many agency sistah and blog friends. Like Maureen, Maria, Louisa, Kristen, Mel and Diana. And Super agent Deidre Knight and my Fab agent, Elaine. It really was: Women Gone Wild! But in the best way. Well, most of the time. Ahem, ’nuff said.
The party was held at the lovely Lenox Hotel in Boston’s Back Bay. A perfect location for walking and shopping. It was absolutely beautiful and the staff could not have been more attentive.

Marley was a lovely and elegant host who was gracious while signing books for her many eager fans. “Just make that out to my biggest inspiration…”

There was an after party at the coolest club called Saint where we were treated to VIP treatment since we were with the famous author. Take a guess at who are the owners of these sparkly toes.

One of my funniest moments of the weekend though came from Ms. Diana when she asked about my three (3) children.

    “Huh?”

“Well you’ve got the twins and the baby, Jack?”

    “Huh”

“Your little one, Jack, that you always tell the stories about on your blog.”

    “Um, Diana, Jack’s my dog.”

“Oh, I thought you were a little tough on him sometimes.”

Big sigh from me. Oh crap.

Thinking back to my daily Jack updates there must be folks out there thinking I’m the worst parent ever and considering calling child services on me. Taking my baby to the groomer and making him sleep in the basement because of all the nose he makes at night. Not to mention making him poop outside. Yikes. I’d call the cops on me. Too funny!! Just to be clear I only talk about Jack because the twins, DS and DD, since they are teens would probably sue me or at least end up in therapy if I talked about them too much on this blog.

Feel free to go on over and give Diana a little good natured ribbing today over this.

Before you go check out my “baby” who I apparently abuse terribly. Aww. Isn’t he the cutest?

More Party pics to come tomorrow.

    best,

    Kwana

    Back from Boston

What’s Jack up to? I think he’s happy I’m back from Boston. Heck, he’s the only one to run to the door and hop up and down when I came home at 1:00 am last night.
So I’m back from Marley’s book launch party and have all sorts of fun stores and pictures to share this week once I’m organized. I met so many of my Agency sistahs and blog friends. Both the party and after party were fab! Warning: Moms on the loose!

Check out Jack with the new Marley Gibson aka Kate Harmon Sorority 101books!!! Yay. (Mar do you know how hard it was to get that shot?)

    Best,

    Kwana
