Not Kansas – Not Oz-Still Home
So it’s here. Today is my birthday. Look around go ahead and look, I am. Slowly….
Nothing has changed. I’m still here and so are you. I’m still the same old me just a day older and now officially 41. A wife, mother of teen twins, former thinner fashionista slash budget designer in the NYC now writer in the outskirts of the NYC and owner of a terrier that sometimes thinks it’s human. Oh and I’m a multi-published blogger. *snicker* How do you like that term. Feel free to use it all you bloggers out there. But other than that no big changes happened overnight. Ah well… big sigh and moving on.
But wait. Before I just move on, in honor of being all these (ever so slightly) fab (in my own mind) things homage must be paid.
So I’d like to raise a glass to me and also a glass (double fisting this weekend totally acceptable for my birthday) to you my dear friends who make the multi-published blogger part possible. Thank you so much for being here ,which is out there in cyber space, and stopping by to say hi and let me know they my words do not fall on deaf ears. That my tree falling in the woods does indeed make a sound. You all are so precious and lovely. Super heroes in your own worlds! Here’s to you!
And thank you Lord for getting me through another year full of all that a year can bring and then some more. I’m still here, saying YES.
Best,
Kwana
P.S. this pic is the sweet cake my Knit buddies gave me on Wednesday. So yummy.
Over The Rainbow
So tomorrow is my birthday and I know that once again I’ll wake up like I always do with a bunch of hopefulness seasoned with a hint of fear. Hopefulness because that’s how I wake each morning to face the day despite my constant jaded twin that whispered in my ear all throughout the night about fear and the uselessness of hope.
But depending on how you look at it (good or bad for me) I was way too affected by this movie as a child and live a life stuck in two worlds. One is in Kansas where it’s cold, harsh and in black and white and the other is the world of my imagination. The world of rainbows and color (and lollipop guilds) where my dreams just refuse to die. Part of me hopes (or is it fears? ) that I’ll wake up and that world of imagination will be gone along with the longing and the hope. I’ll be a grown up for real-real ya’ll. But the other part, the truly hopeful part, hopes that I’ll wake up, open my eyes and be Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
Where will you wake up tomorrow, in Kansas or Over the Rainbow?
Best,
Kwana
P.S.
Thanks so much to my Knitsters for all the love yesterday, Knitting, food, cake and presents! I’m a lucky girl. (Ugh. Getting so past the point where I can say girl.)
And a big Happy Birthday to my friend Wendy! Wishes of a pot of gold for you this year!
Lifted we have a Wild Winner
What’s Jack up to? As I write this Jack is tip tapping around. His little nails making lots of noise on the wood floor. Though he just got a spiffy new summer cut I think the nails could use more help. Or maybe I could use more Patience.
Thanks to random.org the winner of the copy of Wendy Toliver’s Lifted is….
Maria Geraci!! Congratulations Maria. Now for those of you that don’t know Maria let me introduce her. Maria is a talented author herself of 2 novels Bunco Babes Go Wild and Bunco Babes Tell All. You can visit Maria’s site here to find out more about them and her next book The Boyfriend Club which comes out in December. I can’t wait to read it. Maria, send me an email with your info for your book.
In random music news you may or may not want to hear or care about. I’m all about listening to the new Erykah Badu CD. Today I need a Window Seat. I won’t post the her naked statement on the Dallas Mall video here though I do think I get it. Maybe? If I do. I like it. I will share this song which I can’t stop singing.

Come on Eileen… and Steve
What’s Jack up to? I don’t want to say it too loud but Jack has been pretty good these past few days. All sweet and snugly and not too demanding and toddlerish. Of course not that I’ve said it on ye old blog he will totally show out today. Watch out for the fireworks folks.
Thanks to all who commented on the Lifted giveaway from yesterday. There is still time to enter today. So please go to yesterday’s post and leave a comment to enter to win a copy of Wendy’s book Lifted.
In honor of my birthday week I thought I’d post things that I like very much. Now I’m sure I posted this song before but hey it’s my blog so I’ll do what I like and post it again. My favorite 80’s tune Come on Eileen.
And in honor of all the disappointment over not hearing Steve Jobs say that the new iPhone would be available on Verizon yesterday I posted this song in Twitter. This goes out to all of us left longing…
Have a super day!
Best,
Kwana
Lifted with Wendy Toliver and a giveaway!
Happy Monday! And this is a special Monday because it’s the beginning of my birthday week so I’m sure you’ll all stop right now and join me in a moment of raucous cheer. No? Me neither. Actually like holidays my birthday usually gets me down so I’ll be relying on all you folks to keep spirits up around here.
In order to do that I’m kicking off the week with some fun and I’m very proud to welcome my friend, the super talented young adult writer, Wendy Toliver to ye old blog. I met Wendy many years ago at one of RWA’s national conferences and we instantly hit it off. She has such a generous spirit and bubbly personality that you can’t help but be drawn in. I sure was.

Today Wendy is here to celebrate the launch of her latest release: Lifted just out this month. It’s the story of a good girl gone bad. Here’s the blurb:Being bad never felt so good.
Poppy Browne never stole anything in her life before moving to Pleasant Acres and meeting Mary Jane and Whitney. But when Poppy walks out of the mall with her two new friends and her first pair of stolen jeans, she’s hooked.
Before long, Poppy is lifting whenever she gets the urge–it’s never about the merchandise, it’s always about the thrill. But when her secret gets out, Poppy’s clique turns on each other. As she watches her life collapse around her, Poppy must decide where her loyalties lie…and how far she’ll go to protect herself.
Hi Wendy. Welcome!
Tell us what made you write about the controversial topic of teenage shoplifting?
I wanted to write about an issue that is familiar to most people. I watched a TV documentary on teenage shoplifting and got to talking to friends and discovered that most everybody has shoplifted at least a pack of gum sometime in his or her life or knows someone who has. Then, to make it extra controversial, I chose a Bible belt town as the setting. You’ve had a variety of jobs in a short amount of time including acting and even singing telegrams. What brought you to the world of writing?
I’ve always loved writing, and when I was a freelance copy writer, I had an experience in LA that I thought would make a good story so I decided to try my hand at writing fiction. I went about it all wrong (though I did finish the manuscript, which is a good thing) and was glad when someone suggested I join a writing organization like RWA. That was the best thing I could do because it taught me about the industry, gave me ways of meeting new friends with similar interests and goals, and eventually paired me up with my first literary agent.
Why do you enjoy writing young adult?
I really enjoyed that point in my life. Everything is so exciting and the future is wide open. I love that both adults and young adults read it, and there’s something extra special about getting fan mail from teenagers. In general, they’re so enthusiastic and it makes it all worthwhile. You are the mother of three energetic young boys and whenever we talk it’s usually hands free and all the go. How do you find the time to write? What’s your schedule like?
Ha! Lately it’s been really hard because 2 of my boys are in school but school’s out for summer. Basically I get all my internet correspondence done over breakfast and write a couple of hours in the afternoons when they’re playing outside or resting. If I find they’re not cooperating I can also hire a “mommy’s helper” to keep tabs on them while I have writing time. When I’m on a really tough deadline, though, I am lucky that my mom will fly in to take care of my family. With Lifted’s revisions, I was writing 20 –hours a day and I couldn’t have done that without her help. What’s next for you?
I’m really not sure! I just sent a sweet middle grade proposal and a paranormal YA proposal to my agent. I’m eager to hear what she thinks! Thanks so much for being here. Lifted is a fabulous story full of heart and style as all your stories are. I can’t wait for my DD to read it.
Kwana, thank you so much for having me on your blog. And I hope your DD likes it!Also, if anyone would like a shot at winning a Border’s gift card and other fun prizes, please contact me via my web-site. So it’s Saturday and MTV is on in the bedroom. You know the way off in Siberia MTV channel where they actually show videos and this commercial comes on. I freeze and my mouth drops so yeah, effective advertising I guess. We’ll see when the DD ask for the Slap Chop while locking and popping.

Friday Chill Time
Hey it’s Friday. How’d that happen so fast? Jack and I sure don’t know. Oh well it’s here might as well do what we do and make the best of it and throw in a little chillin’ where we can.
Peace Out and Enjoy!

P.S. Did you watch the Not So Real Housewives of the NYC? What did you think? For all the kookiness I thought Ramona’s wedding was nice. And no, money can’t buy you class, but it sure can get you a whole lot of other fun stuff on the Bravo dime.
Money Can’t Buy You Class
Well that’s for sure as this year’s season of the Not So Real Housewives of the NYC has proved. But don’t take it from me just listen to Countess Luanne, at least I think that’s Luanne in this video (it’s a little hard to tell). And the late 70’s early 80’s talkie sing is a Wow.
Will you all be watching the season finale tonight? I will and the Andy after. Go team Bethanny. Yes, I’m 40 and on a team. Sooo not mature. Don’t judge. Please.
Best,
Kwana
A Good Day
What’s Jack up to? Well the Jackster has had us on our toes for sure this weekend. Making off with sausages then going running down the street only to have a neighbor nab him barking in the middle of the road then bring him back home. Yeah Jack was quite the handful on Memorial Day.
But I guess it was just the excitement of the fun day. Memorial day in our town starts with a parade. Most of the town comes out to watch and the Parade ends at the Memorial Field with speeches then hot dogs and sodas for everyone. It ‘s a nice way to give honor and to come out and see neighbors you haven’t seen is a while. Jack had fun seeing all the folks and even his buddy Bentley Ms. PVE’s dog.
Well now it’s back to the weekly grind. I think I may just ease into it. How was your weekend?

Kwana
Comic Craze
Happy Memorial Day! Hope you all are enjoying a wonderful holiday. Jack and I plan on doing the usual and chilling close to the DH as he handles the grill. Can’t go wrong there.
If you remember last year at BEA I was all excited over the Pride and Prejudice comic. This year I got Sense and Sensibility. How cute is it? I also picked up a comic from James Patterson which is exciting for all his fans that go that way. It seems that comics though many of us my have left them before Archie made a choice (did he really marry Veronica?) is very much here to stay and blazing new trails. Do you read comics?
Best,
Kwana
