    Happy Birthday Ma!!

Happy Birthday to my Mom today! Yep, that’s her and I from when I was a little girl. Both of us smiling big and bright just like folks would do in one of those old Woolworth’s photo booths. You can recognize the pic from my avatar to the right there.

As you can see from the pic below Ma has hardly changed at all, though now I’m the taller one. She’s still gorgeous and fabulous and still the same bit of unpredictability she was back then. From her Psalm 23 tattoo, you never know what’s in store with my mom. Not what dress she’ll be wearing or what hair color will go with it. But that’s the charm of Ms. Kay!
This weekend Ma staged a girl’s night out at Roseland ballroom to celebrate her birthday. And when I say staged, I mean staged (guess I get a bit of my control tendencies from her). We had a great time dancing the night away to songs from the 50’s to the 70’s. All of us wearing tiara’s that Ma supplied so folks in the club kept saying Happy Birthday to all of us.

It was a great night and so nice of her to share her birthday joy with all of us.

    Happy Birthday Ma!!

    We Love you!
    DD, DS, DH and Jack

    and

    I Love You too!
    Your daughter,
    Kwana

    The Party Goes On

What’s Jack up to? Jack was a wild boy this morning. Running out the door and chasing behind the poor man that dared to ring our bell to deliver an early AM message. I swear we’re going to get a bad rep, Jack and never get that million dollar check delivered.

Turns out my party is still going on. I was surprised last night by friends and neighbors with yet another cake at dinner. There is nothing nicer then spending a relaxing evening full of good food and laughs with folks you can let you hair down with. The older I get the more I appreciate the value of friends.

I hope you have plenty of cheer this weekend.

    Best,
    Kwana

    With Thanks

I can’t thank you all enough for all the love you’ve given me this week. You all really got me through my 40th birthday blues with style. I’m blessed to have the best family, friends and virtual friends in the world.
    I’m so grateful.
The Universe left this wonderful note in my email box yesterday:
    Happy Birrrrthday to Youuuu,
    Happy Birrrrthday to Youuuu,
    Happy Birrrrthday Dear Kwana,
    Happy Birrrrthday to Youuuu!
A few years back, not so long ago, heaven and earth erupted into a major celebration with the news of your impending adventure into this very time and space.

You see, someone like Kwana Jackson doesn’t come along all that often. In fact, there’s never been a single one like you, nor is there ever ANY possibility that another will come again. You’re an Angel among us. Someone, whose eyes see what no others will EVER see, whose ears hear what no others will EVER hear, and whose perspective and feelings will NEVER, ever be duplicated. Without YOU, the Universe, and ALL THAT IS, would be sadly less than it is.
Quite simply: You’re the kind of person, Kwana,Who’s hard to forget,A one-in-a-million To the people you’ve met.Your friends are as varied As the places you go,And they all want to tell you In case you don’t know:That you make a big difference In the lives that you touch,By taking so little And giving so much!

Kwana, you are so AWESOME! For your birthday, friends and angels from every corner of the Universe, including buddies you didn’t know you had, will be with you to wish you the HAPPIEST of days and an exciting new year in time and space. You won’t be alone!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Kwana!

And it turns out I wasn’t alone. You came out in droves. Here’s a pic of my cake from last night. I wish you all could have been with me to have a taste. But you were in my heart.

Now it’s time for me to tackle this new decade. GO ME and GO YOU. Let’s make this our decade.

    Much love to you all,
    Kwana

    Oh No! It’s My Birthday

    And it’s a big one. 4-0.

I will not go into it graciously or smiling. I’ll admit here it’s hitting me. Hard. All the what ifs, why nots, coulda woulda shouldas, plus the extra pounds are messing with my mind.

I’m normally a bit melancholy on holidays and birthdays, but put on the brave face and count my blessings. And I’m sure I’ll be doing that again on this one. But I’ll also be saying under my breath, “oh crap, it’s my freakin 40th birthday. Now what?”

If only I could be half as gracious as Eddy from Ab Fab here. When you have time watch and enjoy. No, make some time. You’ll thank me.

Tomorrow I’ll be coming on strong. Forty Fabulous and all that mess. Right?

    Best,
    Kwana

    A Series of Unfortunate Events

What’s Jack up to? Jack is wearing himself out with the construction guys around this week. He doesn’t know what to do. One minute he’s barking like crazy the next he’s flopped dead on the couch. Me? I’m worn out too.

The Spring Break week was full of unfortunate events. Well, it started with me still out of sorts with my crazy backlash where I was in much better shape but not tip-top from my back going out. Then things just went wacky and all sorts of stuff kept happening.
The DH took his car for a check ending up needing breaks. Big money and in the shop they crashed his bumper. Who does that?
Then… I got a flat tire. On Good Friday coming from church.
Then… My DD’s last fish died right after speaking not so nicely about the fish. Hmmm….
Then…the worst happened. Blackberry fail! I’m sitting in church, my phone on silent. I look in my bag for a pen and my phone is lit up and going crazy. Huh? I get out of church and ¾ of my pictures are erased. Including my screensaver. My favorite pic of my Twins. I was devastated. I wanted to throw the phone out on the highway. Verizon is no help. Says the phone is bad and will give me a new one. It is no consolation. The memory is gone. A bee is in my bonnet and I can’t let it go. I feel there must be some way to bring them back. Nothing is ever just gone. Blackberry how can you fail me?

So…the Spring break week ended to go right into this. I woke up Monday morning exhausted after Easter and wishing I could sleep in but Dear Teen Twins had to get off to school and the DH off to work. Honestly, I had planned to go back for a nap. I thought the contractor was going to give me a call to discuss the final stair plans. Um…no.

The kids are gone and my DH is just out the door. I’m settled to write a blog post I was too exhausted to write the night before when Jack starts to bark like mad. I get out of bed look out the window and there are 2 trucks, 6 guys and my contractor (yeah, this could be the start of a great story but this is me) And I’m still in my nightgown (not a nice one) with hair sticking up like Woody Woodpecker. Oh Crap.

Help me Jack! I look He’s just barking and no help with finding clean clothes.
Quick grab ye old jeans and sweater from the top of the hamper pile, pull on boots smooth hair and go for it. Smile. You’re on! The week begins.

On an up note they are doing a fine job on my stairs. Contractors are great and adorable with thick Irish brogues. (yeah sounds like a book again.)

And soon my stairs will no longer be a danger. Pics to come.
Thanks for letting me gripe today. I needed to get all that out.
Let’s hope things are looking up.

    Best,
    Kwana

Wait! They are looking up! On this tax day I want to say Happy Birthday to Ceska!! One of my nearest, dearest and oldest friends. “Yeah girl, you are older than me. I’m holding onto these couple of months.”

Ceska and I have been friends since we were maybe 10 or so on the play ground. I even held her hand in the delivery room with her first child one New Year’s Eve night (the hand was never the same!) She’s always had my back and sadly has the memory of an elephant. Darn. That’s not so good. LOL.
So even though it’s tax day. It’s never a sad day for me because it’s my crazy girl’s birthday. I’ll always think of us as roller skating disco diva’s in the 80’s.
    Love ya Ces!

P.S. The Last Unfortunate Event, this post was supposed to post hours ago but I put the time in wrong. PM instead of AM. Sigh. Am I under a cloud?

    Happy Birthday Dear PVE!

What’s Jack up to? Jack’s wishing all of you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Have fun in your green and partying it up today. But please go easy peeps. Cheers!

And a super Happy Birthday to my friend Patricia Van Essche of PVE Designs.

You can check out the amazing artist and blog wonder here or just look up and see her handy work on my banner.

Patrica and I have been friends since back in the days when we were both still in the world of 7th avenue fashion. The friendship was cemented the day I discovered she had some sort of bewitching powers and predicted my twins even before my own doctor! Although I suspect since she had just given birth to her own twins she wanted some to follow her in the madness. Since then we’ve been thick as thieves in good times and so-so. Watching our babies grow up way too fast. Both moving from the city to the sort of country and working hard to make our dreams come true.
Patrica’s works of art around my house. I know, lucky me.

Join me in 3 cheers to Patricia! Happy Birthday! May this year be all you wish for.

    Much Love,

    Kwana

    Happy Birthday Nana!

What’s Jack up to? It’s a big time snow day here in New York. So Jack and I will have extra company with us. He’s been bouncing around all weekend and is sure not not stop anytime soon.

Today is my Dear Nana’s Birthday! Please join me in wishing this phenomenal woman in my life all the best. Nana is the rock in our family, always there to lend an ear or a hand. She even can keep Jack under control and can tame a teen twin with just a glance. Just like her birth month of March, Nana comes in like a lion but she’s really as sweet as a lamb. We love you Nana!

    “Touched by An Angel”
    By Maya Angelou

    We, unaccustomed to courage

    exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
    and comes into our sight
    to liberate us into life.
    Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
    old memories of pleasure
    ancient histories of pain.
    Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
    from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love’s light
    we dare be brave
    And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
    and will ever be.
    Yet it is only love
    which sets us free.

    Best,

    Kwana
